Majed Althonayan, Qomply Intern

What made you choose Qomply?

I first discovered Qomply through Imperial’s Careers Service and was immediately drawn to the internship’s unique combination of development, operations, and business analysis.

As I learned more about the company and the team behind it, it became clear that Qomply would be a great fit for me. Both of my interviews were relaxed and conversational, offering a genuine glimpse into the welcoming and collaborative culture at Qomply.

What is your coding background?

I was first introduced to coding at the age of 13, when my friends and I would create fun games using Scratch and Python to entertain ourselves. From there, I began experimenting and building projects in a wide range of languages, including Python, Java, Flutter, Solidity, Prolog, and many more.

During my university studies, I significantly advanced my coding abilities by working on projects in areas such as Machine Learning, Privacy-Enhancing Technologies, and Decentralised Finance. These experiences deepened my appreciation for how coding can be applied to solve real world problems and it was this realisation that solidified my passion for the industry and my drive to use technology to make a meaningful impact.

What have you learnt during the internship so far?

During this internship programme, I’ve gained hands-on experience coding in a production environment and working across the full stack, from developing web pages for the marketing team to building back-end features and performing regression testing.

Supporting the Managed Services team has also introduced me to the world of transaction reporting, a field I was completely unfamiliar with before the internship. With guidance from our former FCA regulator, Sophia Fulugunya, I’ve developed a strong understanding of the importance of transaction reporting, its role in financial compliance, and how major financial institutions meet the requirements of various regulatory regimes.

What is your favourite part of the internship?

My favourite part of the internship has been gaining exposure to the many different aspects involved in running a successful business. Working with a team from such diverse backgrounds has given me valuable insight into various approaches and perspectives, which has greatly enriched my learning experience

What do you like to do when you aren't working?

Outside of work, I enjoy staying active through powerlifting and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. I’m also a big sports fan and love watching everything from football and Formula 1 to MMA and boxing.
