Imperial College London Physics Master’s Graduate Joins Qomply
Shuyu Jiao joined Qomply’s Intern Programme after completing a Master's in Physics at Imperial College London. In this interview, she shares how her background in Python and in particular data frames led her to apply for the Qomply internship. She shares her favourite aspects of the internship and the new skills and knowledge she’s gained.

What made you choose Qomply?
I found Qomply through my university’s careers site, and it immediately seemed like a great fit. The role called for Python skills, specifically with data frames, which is an area I’m familiar with from my university modules. It also offered the chance to gain insight into the finance sector, which I was keen to learn more about. The interview was a very positive experience; it felt conversational rather than like an interrogation, which made me feel this would be a welcoming and supportive place to work. Overall, it felt like an ideal opportunity to apply my technical skills while stepping into a real-world environment in fintech.
When did you start coding and what is your coding background?
I began coding in high school, but my interest deepened during my physics degree, where I completed several computational modules. Programming became essential for solving problems that lacked analytical solutions and for simulating experiments when physical equipment wasn’t available. I found coding both challenging and enjoyable - like solving puzzles - and it quickly became one of my favourite aspects of studying physics. Over time, I’ve also come to appreciate how coding can automate repetitive tasks, and I feel a real sense of accomplishment when I create scripts that save time and let me focus on more complex challenges.
What have you learnt during the internship so far?
During my internship at Qomply, I’ve gained hands-on experience in web development frameworks and HTML, learning how to create and integrate backend features effectively. I’ve developed my skills in software testing, including unit and regression testing, to support high-quality releases. Supporting a managed service for a client has given me valuable insights into tailoring solutions to client needs. Additionally, I’ve been involved in transaction reporting, gaining familiarity with derivatives and learning about regulatory requirements in financial reporting. This experience has enhanced both my technical skills and regulatory knowledge, equipping me for the unique demands of fintech.
What is your favourite part of the internship?
One of my favourite aspects of this internship is the chance to code and see my work make it into releases. I’m learning a lot, thanks to the supportive and friendly team around me. My seat buddy, Yiqing, is always willing to help with coding questions, and Sophia offers invaluable guidance when it comes to transaction reporting. I also enjoy the monthly team lunches with the development team; we work collaboratively, so it’s great to have such a friendly relationship. I appreciate being trusted to handle my assigned tasks independently, which has helped me build confidence in my work.
